Oldfield Primary School

A community of proud and resilient children who are learning to take their place in the world.

Year 1

Year  1 is a new beginning for the children as it is very different from reception. The Autumn term gives the children time to transition from free-flow to sitting on the tables and working independently. In Year 1, children will begin to embed their phonics skills (previously taught in reception) in their writing and reading. Maths will provide practical opportunities for children to explore numbers and shapes whilst foundation subjects will allow children to show off their creativity!

Please see the termly curriculum maps for more information about learning in Year 1

Miss Mauro (Y1O)

I have a degree in Primary Education specialising in Early Years and KS1 from the University of Brighton. I have worked at Oldfield Primary School for 3 years, and love working in the Early Years Foundation Stage as you are able to embrace every child’s abilities through a creative teaching and learning environment based upon their own interests. I am now co-leading PE within the school, and have a passion for sports and promoting a healthy life style.

Miss Arnold (Y1L)

After some careers advice from my college teacher, I decided that I wanted to work in education. I completed my English degree with honours and then did my PGCE. However, it was only when I first taught a year 1 child to understand place value in an ‘eureka’ moment that I truly realised that teaching is my vocation in life! I completed one of my training placements in Oldfield Primary and have been teaching in KS1 ever since, experiencing those magical moments every day! I’ve had an additional role in being the Art/Computing leader and I’m currently the Maths subject coordinator.
