Oldfield Primary School

A community of proud and resilient children who are learning to take their place in the world.

Spanish

At our school, we teach Spanish to all pupils in Key Stage 2. Our aim is to help children:

  • Enjoy learning a new language
  • Develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish
  • Learn about other cultures and ways of life
  • Build a strong foundation for language learning at secondary school

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Languages and supports children to communicate ideas, understand spoken and written language, and appreciate cultural diversity.

How Spanish Is Taught

Spanish learning develops gradually from Year 3 to Year 6, with regular opportunities to practise and revisit vocabulary and structures.

Teaching focuses on:

  • Oracy – listening and speaking
  • Literacy – reading and writing
  • Intercultural understanding – learning about Spanish-speaking countries and cultures
  • Language learning strategies – helping pupils remember, practise and apply language

Lessons are interactive and include:

  • Songs, rhymes and stories
  • Games, role-play and short performances
  • Visuals, actions and repetition
  • Links to other subjects such as English, Geography and PSHE
