Music Development Plan
Our Vision for Music
At Oldfield Primary School, we believe music is a vital part of a broad and balanced education. Our aim is for every child to experience high-quality music teaching that builds confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music. Through singing, listening, playing instruments, composing and performing, pupils develop essential musicianship skills alongside teamwork, self-expression and wellbeing.
Our Music Curriculum
Our music curriculum is delivered by tutors from Sing Education, who provide weekly music lessons and regular singing assemblies across the school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced from Nursery through to Year 6, ensuring clear progression in skills, knowledge and musical understanding.
Sing Education’s philosophy places the voice at the heart of music education. The voice is our primary instrument and one of the key ways we communicate. It is free, portable and infinitely adaptable, making it accessible to all pupils. Through vocal work, pupils are able to access all areas of musicianship, including pitch, rhythm, listening, performance and expression. For this reason, singing underpins our music curriculum and supports instrumental learning and ensemble work as pupils progress through the school.
Curriculum Progression
In the Early Years, children develop rhythm, pitch-matching and listening skills through movement, singing, rhymes and musical play.
In Key Stage 1, pupils explore pulse, rhythm and pitch, begin simple composition and develop confidence in singing and playing instruments.
In Key Stage 2, pupils build on their musicianship by reading staff notation, performing in ensembles, composing structured pieces and developing expressive performance skills. Pupils also learn to play tuned instruments, including recorders and ukuleles, developing instrumental technique, ensemble skills and musical independence in preparation for Key Stage 3.
Singing and Performance Opportunities
Pupils sing regularly in lessons and during Sing Education-led singing assemblies. There are many opportunities for pupils to perform including class assemblies, whole-school assemblies, school productions and visits to the local retirement home.
Instrumental Tuition
We offer piano and brass lessons delivered by a peripatetic music teacher. Pupil Premium funding is used to support eligible pupils with instrument loan and tuition costs, ensuring equality of access.
Inclusion and Accessibility
Music is inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Lessons are adapted to meet a range of needs and singing ensures every child can participate regardless of prior experience.
Monitoring and Development
The Music Development Plan is reviewed regularly by school leaders in partnership with Sing Education to ensure high-quality provision and continued development.
